Alignment
 

Toe

  • Definition: The difference between leading edges and trailing edges of the front wheel and tire assembly, measured at the spindal.
  • Purpose: Minimize tire wear and rolling friction
  • Too much Toe postive or negitive: 1. Rapid tire wear on outside edge is to much positive toe. Inside tire edge would mean to much negitve toe. 2. Extreme vehicle wandering or shimmy .

 
 

  With Lafayette's perfect roads it is crucial for your vehicle to be aligned once a year. As your vehicle steers itself into one of many potholes we have, with every jolt to the suspension your alignment numbers move. This is why once a year you should have your vehicles alignement checked. Toe Angle is about 90% of premature tire wear.

 

 

 

 
 
Toe

Caster 

  • Definition:    The forward or backward tilt of the upper ball joint, or top of the strut, relative to the lower ball joint.
  • Purpose:  Caster affects steering stability and steering wheel returnabilty.
  • Positive Caster: The upper ball joint or top strut bearing  is toward the rear of the vehicle in relation to the lower ball joint  as viewed from the side of the vehicle.
  • Negative Caster: The upper ball joint or top strut bearing is toward the front if the vehicle in realtion to the lower ball joint as viewed from the side of the vehicle.
  • Symptoms of Negative Caster: 1) Steering wheel shows lack of returnablity after a turn.   2) Steering is touchy at high speed(wander or weave).

Caster

 

 Camber

  • Definition: Inward or outward tilt of the top of the tire.
  • Purpose: Adjustment centers the vehicle's load on the tire, eliminating pul. Proper adjustment reduces camber tire wear and pulling.
  • To much Positive Camber: 1.) Wear on the outside of the tire. 2.) Extra wear on the suspension parts with positive camber. 3.) The vehicle will pull to te side with the most positive camber.
